HVR-V1U Compact Camcorder/
Optional HVR-DR60 Digital Capture Disk

With the groundbreaking HVR-V1U compact professional camcorder, in addition to standard 60i you can shoot progressive scan footage and still edit using regular Sony HDV equipment. To expand the range of video productions, the HVR-V1U supports 24p and 30p Progressive scan mode, compatible with existing Sony professional HDV equipment. Breathtakingly beautiful picture quality is assured by the "3 ClearVid CMOS Sensor" system and Carl Zeiss® Vario-Sonnar® T* lens with extra-low dispersion glass and 20x optical zoom. Expertly engineered for superb operating ease and optimum mobility in the field, this compact camcorder is a masterpiece of balanced, functional design.

The 24p scan signals are recorded on tape as 60i signals through means of 2:3 pull-down. Similarly, a 30p scan signal is recorded as a 60i signal by dividing each frame into two fields. This allows your 24p and 30p scan footage to be played back or fed to an editing suite using the thousands of Sony HDV equipment already in use throughout the world.

Leading manufacturers are scheduled to release nonlinear editing software compatible with this 24p scan mode. These nonlinear software can detect the 2-3 sequence and remove the 2-3 properly. This way, the editor can create a 24p project, edit precisely at 24fps (23.98 progressive frames per second) throughout the process, and output the final master as:

  1. A sequence of still images at 24 fps, for film out
  2. A 23.98 YUV (uncompressed) HD file, for output to Cinealta™ products
  3. A 23.98 SD MPEG2 file, for the highest quality DVD mastering possible
  4. A 60i HDV file (2:3 added back in), for creating an HDV edit master
  5. A 60i YUV (2:3 added back in, uncompressed) HD or SD file, for outputting to Digital Betacam™ or HDCAM™ for broadcast

While shooting you can simultaneously record files to hard disk using the optional HVR-DR60, so for non-linear editing there's no need to capture data from tape.
