An Industry in Motion - The Latest from Samy\'s DV & Edit

Since the introduction of DSLR cameras that can shoot HD Video, the changes in our industry have been astonishing. Manufacturers and brilliant third-party developers have applied imagination and sweat-equity to solve some longstanding problems; as a result, shooters have more choices, and better choices, than at anytime in history.  The products in this month's newsletter represent the new paradigm as well as anything on the market right now.

The Panasonic AG-AF100

Panasonic makes a camera that attempts to give you the best of both worlds - combining a big chip and interchangeable lenses, giving you that shallow depth of field, with the form factor and features of a dedicated video camera, saving you the headaches involving focus and audio known to users of DSLRs.

The AG-AF100 could be the next game-changer.  Like with the DSLRs, the Micro Four Thirds chip is comparable in size to  the image-capturing portion of a frame of 35mm film.  The relation between the chip and the lens provides videographers and DPs the cinematic look that caused the exodus to the still camera world.

Because it's a real video camera, rather than a still camera modified to do another job, the AF-100 has all the features pro shooters are used to, including focus assist functions and XLR inputs.  Multiple frame rates make it easy to "float" your action.

The Sony PMW-320k - Now in Stock!

Sony's PMW-320 extends the multiple award-winning XDCAM EX Solid State Recording product family with a new shoulder mount design and cutting edge 1/2 inch-type Exmor full-HD CMOS sensors. The PMW-320 offers all the advanced creative recording features of the PMW-EX1R and PMW-EX3 compact camcorders, plus enhancements such as a Scene File System and 4 channel audio. The PMW-320L version is supplied without a lens to provide customers with more choice, while the PMW-320K version is supplied with a Fujinon HD lens.

The Canon EOS 7D PL Mount Modification

Responding to the increasing popularity of DSLRs in motion pictures, Samy's DV has begun to sell Hot Rod Camera's modified Canon 7D cameras.  Hacking the 7D to allow use of PL Mount lenses gives shooters access to hundreds of quality motion picture lenses.

Your choices include purchasing an already modified 7D ($4799), purchasing a refurbished 7D that has been modified ($4399), or sending in your 7D and having it modified ($3249).  Call us for details.

The Panasonic AG-3DA1

3D has invaded the theaters, the living room is next.  Now networks and producers are screaming for content. The Panasonic AG-3DA1 is the first affordable camera on the block.

The AG-3DA1 is inexpensive enough to let independent producers in the game, but contains the same technology that gave indie filmmakers access to the theaters when Panasonic introduced the venerable HVX-200.
